Baby Safety Month: Staying Safer in and Around the Water
It’s Baby Safety Month – and that means making sure your baby is safer in and around the water. We can help with that! At Goldfish Swim School, our instructors use integrity, compassion and trust to teach babies as young as 4 months old how to swim and water safety skills. Here are 5 tips parents can take to keep baby safer:
1. Prevent access to pools and waterIt doesn’t take long at all for little ones to wander off, unbeknownst to their caregiver. It helps to be prepared should that ever happen – so make sure your pool has a gate that is always locked. Take precautions when living on a lake or river to have a barricade between your home and entry to the water so you have a GOLDEN experience every time and prevent a possible water emergency.
2. Enroll your baby in swim lessons
Yes, your baby can start learning to swim as young as 4 months old, so that by the time she is ready to walk, swimming will already be a natural thing. Sure, we don’t expect your baby to be doing laps around the pool by her first birthday – but she can see extraordinary results such as knowing how to put her face in the water, turning over to float on her back, and other skills to keep her safer in and around the water.
3.Teach siblings water safety skills
Even if you’ve seen older siblings play around in the water, it’s still important that they learn to swim as well. By taking swim lessons at Goldfish Swim School, older siblings will also learn what to do in a possible water emergency – so they’ll instinctively be able to jump in or call for help if needed, saving precious time.
4.Keep toys away from the pool
Babies love to learn and explore, and if they see toys they like to play with, they’ll do what they can to reach said toy – even if that means the toys are floating around in the middle of the pool. It can seem pointless to take the toys out when you head inside for lunch, but removing the temptation can help keep your little ones safer when you’re not even swimming. (Read Levi’s story here.)
5.Know how to swim
Babies can pick up on our emotions even when we don’t suspect it. When you’re comfortable in the water, chances are your baby will be as well – which can lead to less panic on both ends. If you don’t know how to swim, you may be hesitant in the water and it may be apparent to your little one. Learn to swim and set yourself up to celebrate years of family fun ahead!
